About New Smyrna Beach
New Smyrna Beach sits on the central east coast with the Atlantic on one side and the Indian River Lagoon system on the other. Downtown is on the mainland, west of the Indian River, and the Coronado Beach Bridge crosses the Intracoastal just south of Ponce de Leon Inlet to reach the barrier island. The 2020 census counted 30,142 residents and 2023 estimates put it near 32,655.
It is a surf town in the way few Florida towns genuinely are. Surfer ranked it ninth on its list of best surf towns in 2009, and National Geographic named it one of the world's top 20 surf towns in 2012.
It is also, in its own words and everyone else's, the shark attack capital of the world. Ponce de Leon Inlet puts bait, surfers and blacktip sharks in the same water, and the bite count that results is probably the single most searched fact about the town. It has not slowed the surf economy down.
The history is older than most of Florida's coastal development. In 1768 the Scottish physician Andrew Turnbull founded the colony of New Smyrna, recruiting roughly 1,300 settlers and naming it for the birthplace of his wife, Gracia Dura Bin, in Smyrna. Nobody had previously attempted to settle that many people at once in a North American town. The New Smyrna Beach Historic District preserves part of what followed.
