About Lake Mary

Lake Mary is a suburban city of 16,798 at the 2020 census in the Greater Orlando metro.

It is named for Mary Sundell, wife of the Reverend J.F. Sundell, who settled on the northern shore of the lake. The city grew out of two tiny settlements, Bent's Station on the north shore of Crystal Lake and Belle Fontaine, both on the South Florida Railroad between Sanford and Orlando. Early settlers were lumbermen, turpentine workers, families from Fort Reed who had received land grants, and Swedish orange growers.

Frank Evans, a tightrope walker turned chemist who arrived in 1882, did most of the developing. He built the original Lake Mary Elementary School along with many homes and commercial buildings, founded the Chamber of Commerce in 1923 and became a county commissioner in 1926. The first post office opened in February 1887 and the city incorporated on August 7, 1973.

It is home to the 2024 Little League World Series champions, and Money magazine ranked it the fourth best place to live in America back in August 2007.
