Ormond Beach is a city of 43,080 residents at the 2020 census, directly north of Daytona Beach and a principal city of the same metro area.
It calls itself the birthplace of speed. Before paved roads were common, early motorists brought their cars to its hard-packed beaches to run them, and the racing culture that later moved south to Daytona started on this sand.
The name comes from James Ormond I, a sea captain commissioned by King Ferdinand VII of Spain to bring Franciscan settlers to this part of Florida. The community was founded in 1875 as New Britain by arrivals from New Britain, Connecticut, and was incorporated as the Town of Ormond on April 22, 1880. The St. Johns and Halifax Railway reached it in 1886, which is when the winter-resort era began in earnest.
Geographically it sits where the Tomoka River meets the Halifax River, the site of the Timucuan town of Nocoroco recorded by Alvaro Mexia in 1605.
