About Howey In The Hills
Howey-in-the-Hills is a town of 1,643 at the 2020 census, on the west shore of Little Lake Harris. State Road 19 runs through it as Palm Avenue and leads eight miles north to Tavares.
It is a developer's town by design. William John Howey, a citrus grower and real estate developer, began platting land near Lake Harris for housing in 1921, incorporated it as the Town of Howey in 1925 and served as its first mayor, then renamed it Howey-in-the-Hills in 1927 for the rolling country he nicknamed the Florida Alps.
Florida's first citrus juice factory was built here by Howey in 1921.
