About DeBary
DeBary is named for Samuel Frederick de Bary, a New York wine merchant who bought land here in 1871 and built a winter hunting lodge above the St Johns River. DeBary Hall still stands, a twenty room Italianate house that has been restored as a museum and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland both stayed there.
The modern city is much younger than its name suggests. DeBary did not incorporate until the end of 1993, which makes it one of the newer municipalities in the county despite being one of the older settlements.
For buyers the practical draw is the commute. The DeBary SunRail station opened in 2014 and was the northern end of the line for a decade, until the DeLand station opened in 2024. That decade of being the last stop shaped the town: it is the closest Volusia County gets to a rail commuter suburb of Orlando, and it prices and sells accordingly.
