About Gotha
Gotha is a census designated place in west Orange County sitting between Ocoee and Windermere, with a population of 2,217 at the 2020 census across about two square miles. The median age was 39.4.
It was founded in 1885 by a German immigrant, H. A. Hempel, who bought 1,000 acres, laid out a town and named it after his birthplace of Gotha in Germany. He then mailed pamphlets to northern cities and to Europe advertising the mild winters, and several German American families followed. Hempel Avenue, the main street, carries his name. The post office had already opened in 1883.
Two things bring visitors. Gotha is the resting place of the painter Bob Ross, and it is home to Nehrling Gardens, developed by the horticulturist Henry Nehrling.
