Leesburg had exactly 27,000 residents at the 2020 census. It sits between Lake Harris and Lake Griffin at the head of the Ocklawaha River, which is why so much of what trades here is water-adjacent.
It was first settled in 1857 by Evander McIver Lee and Susannah Lee, and named by his brother John Calvin Lee. It incorporated as the City of Leesburg on July 12, 1875, and for a time served as the county seat of Sumter County, before Lake County was formed in 1887 with Tavares as its seat.
In the early twentieth century this was watermelon country. The first Watermelon Festival ran in 1930 and the tradition lasted nearly thirty years; by the last one in 1957 the melons had to be trucked in from outside the area.
Lake-Sumter State College and Beacon College are both here, which is unusual for a city this size.
