About The Villages
The Villages is a census-designated place spanning Sumter, Marion and Lake counties, and the center of a larger age-restricted master-planned community of the same name. The CDP counted 79,077 residents at the 2020 census.
It started in Lake County. In the early 1970s Harold Schwartz and Al Tarrson developed Orange Blossom Gardens, a mobile home park in northwestern Lake County, which had sold about 400 units by the early 1980s. Schwartz bought out his partner in 1983 and brought in his son H. Gary Morse, who expanded it into what exists now. The town it grew out of is next door: see Lady Lake homes for sale.
