About Tavares
Tavares is the county seat of Lake County, 19,003 residents at the 2020 census.
It was founded in 1880 by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, a newspaper and railroad man who named it for a Portuguese ancestor. He wanted it to be the state capital and put over half a million dollars of his own money into it. That did not happen, but in 1887 it was designated the county seat, and he later chartered a railroad from Tavares to Orlando. The town incorporated in 1919.
