Moving from Texas to Orlando: Costs, Areas and Homes
Texas and Florida both skip the state income tax, so the difference shows up in the property tax bill. In the six big metro counties of Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Travis and Collin, the typical homeowner pays $4,381 to $7,319 a year. Around Orlando, the typical bill is about $2,700 to $3,200.
Texas softens that with a large homestead exemption, and homes in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio cost less than they do here. This page puts both sides of the math next to each other, county by county.

How homestead protection compares
Texas: a residence homestead gets a $140,000 exemption from school district taxes, plus an additional $60,000 for homeowners 65 or older or disabled, applying from the tax year beginning January 1, 2025. The appraised value of a homestead can rise no more than 10% a year.
Florida: the first $25,000 of assessed value is exempt from all property taxes, and a second exemption of up to $26,411 for 2026 applies to non-school taxes. Save Our Homes caps yearly increases in assessed value at 3% or the change in CPI, whichever is lower. You must own and live in the home by January 1 and apply by March 1.
What that means: Texas's school exemption is larger, but Florida's cap on yearly assessment growth is tighter. The table above shows where the typical bill lands after all of that, and in every Texas county listed, the median bill is higher than in the four Central Florida counties.

What Texas movers ask
Are property taxes lower in Orlando than in Texas?
For the typical homeowner, yes. In the Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey, the median yearly real estate tax paid was $4,108 across Texas and $4,381 to $7,319 in Bexar, Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Travis counties, against $2,696 to $3,227 in Orange, Seminole, Lake and Volusia counties.
Does Florida or Texas have a state income tax?
Neither taxes individual income. Texas's constitution bars a personal income tax, and Article VII, Section 5 of the Florida Constitution bars a state tax on the income of individuals.
How does the Texas homestead exemption compare with Florida's?
Texas exempts $140,000 of a homestead's value from school district taxes, plus $60,000 more for homeowners 65 or older or disabled, and caps yearly appraisal increases at 10%. Florida exempts the first $25,000 from all property taxes plus up to $26,411 for 2026 from non-school taxes, and caps yearly assessment increases at 3% or CPI, whichever is lower.
Will a Texas home sale buy an equal home in Orlando?
It depends on where you are selling. The 2024 median home value was $284,400 in Bexar County, $301,700 in Harris and $330,500 in Dallas, below the $353,500 to $432,500 range in the four Central Florida counties. Collin and Travis medians ran $543,800 to $545,700, above it.
